The Greek American Heritage Society of Philadelphia (GAHSP) is a volunteer-based organization with the mission of preserving and promoting Hellenism with a goal of inspiring social change and triggering personal growth by reconnecting both youth and adults to their heritage.
The Digital Archives internship is part of a long-term project for the digital archiving of artifacts of local Greek American historical significance, currently housed at our Heritage Center facility located at the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 256 S 8th St, Philadelphia, PA 19107. The project will involve working with prints, documents, photographs and other media in the collection.
Interns will conduct research to assess which images, if any, are in the public domain, and any copyright details that may be associated with them. All of the images will be digitized and made broadly available to the public on the web. Interns will catalog the metadata into a master spreadsheet. Specifically, intern tasks will include glass-negative scanning, scanning transparencies of collections objects, creating metadata, and assisting with loading new images into our digital asset management system.
Applicants should be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in archival studies, library and information science, museum studies. Recent graduates of undergraduate programs will also be considered. Fluency in Greek is helpful but not necessary. Ideal candidates will have experience with photography, scanning, and postproduction using Adobe Photoshop and have the ability to work in an office environment managing physical and digital filing systems. Salary will be hourly, TBD.
