Combining state-of-the-art modelling of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) with local knowledge and requirements, to understand what to do and where to do it, and create a system that can be reliably reproduced across Kenya and beyond. Look at (1) farm benefits through stopping erosion, stopping flood damage, capturing water for irrigation, maintaining biodiversity across farms to enhance entire ecosystem function (including soil quality), which will benefit aspiration for organic agriculture on the farms (2) potential to create new income streams through ecosystem services, such as reducing flooding of local towns, improving river water quality. The Volunteer should be ready and willing to enter into a binding mutual memorundum of understanding.
Visiting the farms and then liaising with Make Home in Heaven Ministries to fully understand the situation. Identify objectives of farmers and MHHM, and constraints of farmers such as budgets or access to equipment, then plan types of NbS interventions. Do modelling & create plans. Provide to farmers and liaise with MHHM as the plans are implemented in year 1. Learn from this what was simple or difficult to implement, what is practical and what is impractical to create. Revise interventions and implementation plans for year 2, and monitor effects of interventions completed in year 1. year 3 start to apply knowledge gained from monitoring of year 1 and 2 work to understand what has been most successful at improving the well being of farmers (including health, finances, stress etc), as well as begin to identify additional sources of income, due to the benefits NbS provide to third parties (such as reduced flooding). Reviewing and creating template guidance or tool for applying NbS successfully across Kenya and East Africa.
