Communications Manager

House Rabbit Society is looking for a talented and self-motivated Communications Manager to lead our marketing and communications activities in a fast-paced collegial team environment. Our mission is to save the lives of rabbits, and help educate and support people in giving rabbits excellent care – help us show the world the inspiring work that we do, so that they can join us in helping rabbits.

Organization: House Rabbit Society is a rabbit rescue and education organization. This position will be working at House Rabbit Society headquarters in Richmond, CA, together with a staff of six.

Supervises: Volunteer Coordinator’s 25% membership assistant role


  • Membership Communications
  • Develop and implement strategies to attract and retain members of House Rabbit Society. Manage the database (Little Green Light), record donations, write and issue thank you letters and send member cards. Oversee regular communications with members, including newsletters, invitations to events, fundraising drives, and respond to membership questions/inquiries. Supervise the Volunteer Coordinator’s 25% role in membership assistance – doing membership data entry, production of thank you letters, and other membership tasks. Help to grow the major gifts and the Bunny Brigade monthly giving programs. Assist the Executive Director with fundraising appeal letter production.Meet regularly with the Executive Director to develop customized thank you letters for different types of donors, alert the Executive Director of larger gifts for personal follow-up, set monthly membership goals, create a monthly membership report tracking current member numbers.

  • House Rabbit Journal – Editing, Design, and Production
  • Design the House Rabbit Journal, our print magazine mailed to House Rabbit Society’s members twice a year. Coordinate the volunteer editorial team and volunteer writers. Ensure photographs and graphics are retouched and prepared for print. Design journal layout. Edit articles as needed. Quality assurance edit and proofread final edited articles. Copyfit articles. Prepare PDFs for the printer and review proofs. Coordinate print production and mailing with the print shop.

  • E-newsletter – Writing, Design, and Production
  • Write, design, and produce twice-monthly e-newsletter with updates from House Rabbit Society headquarters and chapters. Send mass emails with Constant Contact. Work with Executive Director and Volunteer Coordinator to identify e-newsletter content. Develop and implement strategies for email list growth.

  • Education and Adoption Mission-oriented Marketing and Communications Projects

  • Create design, photography, and video projects and/or coordinate volunteers to produce content for House Rabbit Society’s educational messaging, events, and programs. Creatively promote the adoption program and adoptable rabbits.

  • Social Media
  • Manage HRS headquarters social media, including Facebook (, Instagram (, Twitter (, and YouTube ( Create processes and procedures for volunteers to contribute to social media consistent with organizational standards.

  • General Customer Service
  • Together with staff and volunteer team, provide customer service and education about rabbits in person, over phone, and email, as needed. Provide in-person customer service including greeting visitors, providing brief tours and educational materials, and referring them to Volunteer Coordinator for volunteer opportunities. Assist volunteers providing customer service in person or over the phone. Assist with events, average 2-3x/year.


  • Passionate about working for and with rabbits, and committed to House Rabbit Society’s mission (
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience: Previous experience in communications, ideally in a nonprofit or animal welfare context
  • Familiarity with Little Green Light or similar development CRM, Constant Contact, Hootsuite or other social media calendaring system, or Adobe Creative Suite a plus
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with excellent attention to detail
  • Reliable and dependable
  • Able to communicate well, with good interpersonal skills. Willing to be helpful to members, the public, volunteers, and co-workers at all times, and provide good customer service
  • Able to understand and execute detailed instructions, learn and process new information quickly, meet time sensitive demands, and juggle multiple assignments smoothly and professionally
  • Able to work as a team, work well with people in a diverse workplace environment, and also work independently
  • Physical Demands

  • Able to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, telephone, iPad, and other devices
  • Ability to hear, answer, and respond to telephone calls and stand to open the door for visitors
  • Able to stand or sit for extended periods, be positioned in front of a computer monitor for extended periods, and able to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Able to work at a steady pace and complete tasks on schedule
  • Able to be exposed to allergens, including rabbits and grasses/hay
  • Hours/Days

    8-hour shifts, 5 days a week

    Possibility for working remotely on Mondays, by mutual agreement

    This is a full-time, exempt position.

    Salary & Benefits

  • $50,000-$55,000, dependent upon experience and qualifications
  • 100% paid health and dental insurance
  • Paid vacation (1 week/year) & paid sick time (5 days/year)
