IGNITE: Asian American LEAD Summer Program 2019 focuses on exploring identity through the lens of AALEAD’s 2019 theme IGNITE: Discover Your Passion. Youth participants in the program will get to explore their own and their community members’ identities and experiences, participate in interactive workshops, attend field trips, and create art to tell their stories.

AALEAD is seeking 2 committed volunteers to supporting low income Asian American youth, immigrant, and youth of color through Positive Youth Development approaches on weekly basis. Volunteers will be working with AALEAD staff to support 25-30 middle school and high school students and provide supervision and safety for program participants.The DC IGNITE Summer Program meets Monday through Wednesday on-site at Alice Deal Middle School in DC from 10-3pm, with a field trip component on Thursdays. Volunteers may have the opportunity to attend field trips as well. The program runs from July 8 to August 1, 2019.

Program Aides are expected to volunteer at least once per week Monday through Wednesday during either the morning or afternoon shift. Scheduling is flexible, and a best fit for undergraduate students, graduate students, retirees, or working professionals with flexible weekday mornings/afternoons.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Encourage positive youth behavior, engagement, and participation
  • Facilitate energizers, ice breakers, and team building activities that foster a sense of community among program participants
  • Support youth individually and in small groups in completing a culminating creative project
  • Provide supervision to ensure physical and emotional safety of youth
  • Support logistical tasks such as snack/lunch coordination and attendance tracking
  • Build rapport with all program participants and be a positive role model
  • Carry out other specific tasks as directed by AALEAD staff
  • Physical lifting of program supply boxes up to 50 lbs possible, not required

  • Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must successfully pass background checks as required by AALEAD and the host site
  • Have strong initiative and be a self-starter
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to interact with high school students, middle school students, and staff
  • Experience in creative mediums such as visual art, video production, etc.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including low income, under-served, Asian American youth
  • Commitment to Positive Youth Development practices

  • Training & Supervision:

  • All volunteers will complete an orientation to AALEAD and training and training on Positive Youth Development and youth engagement best practices
  • Volunteer will report to Aaron Orpilla,DC Middle and High School Program Coordinator
